掛軸の形によってあったり、無かったりですが。

一幅の掛軸に使用する裂地の中で、一番高価な裂地を用いることが通例となっています。
なので「金襴」が用いられていることが多いです。
金紗（きんしゃ）と呼ばれる、紗（しゃ／細かい網戸のような裂地）に平金糸で柄が施された一文字などが多く見受けられ、
極々たま〜に「竹屋町」と呼ばれる、金襴の中で最も高価ではないかっ！と思われる裂地を用いた掛軸などがあります。
ちなみに、この「竹屋町」は京都の竹屋町で最初に作られたのが名前の由来だとか。

竹屋町通りの由来は、平安京の大炊御門大路（おおいのみかどおおじ）にあたる通りで、
特に堀川付近に竹細工を扱う竹屋が多かったことから、「竹屋町」と呼ばれるようになったとされています。
